The blue-banded bee

The blue-banded bee (Amegilla cingulata) is one of Australia’s most striking native bees — and one of the few most people actually notice. It’s the flash of iridescent blue that hovers in front of a summer flower and is gone before you’re sure you saw it. Native to Australia, solitary, and a buzz-pollination specialist that does a job the European honeybee physically cannot, it’s a small bee with an outsized importance to the plants it visits.

How to recognise one

Blue-banded bees are unmistakable once you know them. They’re a little smaller than a honeybee, with a furry tan-brown thorax and a dark abdomen crossed by bands of shimmering, pale blue-green hair — bands that catch the light almost like metal. They are not the flat yellow-and-black of a honeybee or a wasp. A useful field mark: the males carry more complete bands (typically five), the females fewer (usually four), the females’ bands slightly broken in the middle.

The other giveaway is the way they fly. Where a honeybee lands heavily and crawls over a flower, a blue-banded bee hovers — holding station in front of a bloom, darting to the next in a blur, working fast and rarely still. If you see a small, fast, blue-striped bee hovering in front of a flower on a warm day, you’re almost certainly watching one. They’re common right across mainland Australia, in gardens, parks and bushland, cities included.

Buzz pollination — the trick honeybees can’t do

The blue-banded bee’s real distinction is buzz pollination, or sonication. Some flowers don’t offer their pollen freely — they hold it locked inside narrow tubes in the anther, released only when the flower is vibrated at just the right frequency. The blue-banded bee grips the flower, curls around it, and rapidly contracts its flight muscles without flapping its wings, producing a high-pitched buzz that shakes the pollen out in a burst. It then gathers the shower of pollen that falls.

The European honeybee cannot do this at all — it never evolved the behaviour, and it leaves those flowers largely unserviced. Yet many important plants depend on exactly this technique: tomatoes, eggplants, chilli and capsicum, kiwifruit, blueberries, cranberries, and a long list of native wildflowers. For these, a blue-banded bee isn’t a nice-to-have — it’s a better tool for the job than a honeybee will ever be.

Where they live and nest

Unlike honeybees, blue-banded bees are solitary. There is no colony, no queen, no shared hive and no honey store — every female is her own queen, and she builds and provisions her own nest alone. She digs a burrow, usually into soft material: a clay bank, a mudbrick, a sandstone block, or famously the soft lime mortar between the bricks of an old wall, where a cluster of pencil-width holes is often her work. At the end of each burrow she builds a small chamber, stocks it with a ball of pollen and nectar, lays an egg on it, and seals it — one cell at a time.

Though solitary, they are sociable about location: where the ground is good, many females will nest close together in a loose aggregation, dozens of individual burrows side by side. It looks like a colony but isn’t — just good real estate. They don’t swarm, they very rarely sting (and only a female, if seriously provoked), and they do no structural damage worth worrying about — the mortar they use is already soft. At dusk the males leave the nesting area entirely and roost in the open, clinging by their jaws to a twig or dry grass stem, sometimes several together, to sleep out the night.

The greenhouse research

Because they buzz-pollinate tomatoes so effectively, blue-banded bees drew serious research interest. Greenhouse tomatoes need buzz pollination to set fruit, and overseas this job is done by commercially reared bumblebees. Bumblebees are established in Australia only in Tasmania, where they arrived in 1992; on the mainland their import and use has been repeatedly refused on environmental grounds, for fear of what an introduced social bee would do to native ecosystems. That left Australian greenhouse growers looking for a home-grown alternative — and the blue-banded bee, a native buzz-pollinator, was the obvious candidate.

The University of Adelaide ran a research program through the 2000s exploring how to use blue-banded bees for greenhouse tomato pollination. Funding for the work ceased around the end of 2009, and it never reached commercial scale. That’s less a failure than a measure of the challenge: Europe’s bumblebee pollination industry took twenty years and many research groups to develop. Rearing and managing a solitary native bee at commercial scale is harder still. The potential is real and proven in principle; realising it is simply patient, long-term science that hasn’t yet been resourced to the finish.

How to bring them to your garden

Blue-banded bees are easy to attract if you give them what they need, and a garden with them in it pollinates your tomatoes for free. Plant what they love: they’re drawn especially to blue and purple flowers — salvias, lavender, rosemary, abelia, native Dianella (blue flax lily), and of course the tomato and eggplant flowers they service so well. Aim for something in bloom right through the warm months, so there’s forage from spring into autumn.

Then give them somewhere to nest: leave a patch of bare, undisturbed clay or a low earthen or mudbrick edge, undisturbed and unmulched, where a female can dig. Skip the pesticides entirely — the systemic ones especially, which turn up in pollen and nectar. Do that, and you won’t need to introduce them; the local blue-banded bees will find you.
