Want to keep bees? Learn at the hive — beekeeping mentoring in Melbourne

BeesFriend takes on the occasional learner — hands on, with real colonies across South East Melbourne. It’s by arrangement, when the bees allow, for people who are serious about getting started.

How it works

The bees come first, so this isn’t a scheduled course with set dates. It’s the occasional session, arranged around the season and the hives — for someone who genuinely wants to learn, not just look.

At the hive

Hands on with a real colony: opening a hive, reading the frames, handling bees calmly, and understanding what each season asks of you. There’s no substitute for standing at an open hive with someone who’s done it for years.

Or just a conversation

If you’re only thinking about it, sometimes the most useful thing is an honest chat first — what you actually need, what it takes, and whether keeping bees is right for you, before you spend a cent.

Who it’s for

It’s best suited to people who are serious about keeping bees and want to do it well, and kindly. Everyone starts somewhere — but this works best when you’re ready to commit to the bees, not just the idea. Sessions are based around our apiaries in Berwick and South East Melbourne.
